Cada wins WSOP 2009 main event – Online Casino News

Twenty-one-year-old Joseph Cada has become the youngest main event champion in the 40-year history of the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) after defeating challenger Darvin Moon on Tuesday morning.

For his triumph at the Penn And Teller Theater of the Rio All-Suite Hotel And Casino in Las Vegas, the poker player from Michigan will take home $8.55 million in prize money along with a gold bracelet.

Moon is a self-employed logger from western Maryland and revealed that he does not have an e-mail account and has never played a game of online poker. However, he will now be able to invest in some serious computer equipment after winning $5.18 million for his second place finish.

Cada went into the heads-up final Monday evening with a near two-to-one chip lead over his opponent but Moon soon fought back to take a slight advantage after only twelve hands. The pair then traded the lead several times over 88 hands and nearly three hours of play with a single 20-minute break.

The young challenger took the lead for good after Moon pounced with the board showing two tens, a nine and a five. However, the Shelby Township native remained calm and, after thinking for several minutes, called the bet and flipped over a nine for a pair. Moon held a straight draw but didn’t hit his hand on the river and the lead switched back to Cada, which drew roars from the crowd of over 1,500.

The final hand saw Cada turn over a pair of nines after 46-year-old Moon had called all in with a suited queen/jack. With most of the chips then on the table, the board showed two sevens, a king, an eight and a deuce, which didn’t connect with either player’s cards but gave Cada the win.

“I ran really well and I never really thought this was possible,” said Cada.

“It was one of those dreams and I’m thankful it came true.”

Cada is 340 days younger than last year’s WSOP main event winner, Peter Eastgate from Denmark, and the American posed for photos after his win alongside his mother, Ann, who is a dealer at the MotorCity Casino Hotel in downtown Detroit.
