Finland Exploring Online Gambling Advertising Ban
Bad Finland Finland has drawn the ire of the European Commission with their gambling monopolies. Now, the country is attempting to correct their violations of European Union law by exploring a nationwide ban on all gambling marketing.
Currently, state betting and lottery companies can advertise through sponsorship. That would become illegal under a new plan, and companies would no longer be able to sponsor sports teams or advertise anywhere their gambling businesses.
“This is sort of a way for Finland to show the Commission that they are trying to comply,” said observer John Grastry, “But really, other gaming companies outside of Finland would still not be allowed to operate in the country.”
Ladbrokes has offered a legal challenge to Finland gaming policies. The company was denied a license back in May 2007. The Finnish Supreme Administrative Court was protecting the local gambling monopoly at the time.
Finland is not the only country that has been in violation of EU laws. Spain has recently attempted to comply, while the US has been given a grace period by the European Commission to correct their laws that are in violation of EU trade agreements.
